Laboratory water purification unit with filter cartridges and a monitoring display

Labs, Hospitals & Clinics

Hospitals, surgery centres, sterile processing and research labs all depend on water doing something specific — and all of them are accountable for it in ways an office building never is. What every one of these standards asks for first is somebody accountable, and in most buildings that person does not exist.

Why us

Why clinical buildings call us

Somebody has to be accountable

Every standard here asks first for a named person responsible for the water. In most buildings there is not one. We write the plan and keep the file (TJC PE.04.01.05).

Numbers an inspector accepts

Every reading printed beside the standard it is measured against, dated and in a format you can hand over without explaining it.

Sized to the site, not the catalogue

Fixture count, peak draw and the equipment you actually run decide the system — not the square footage or the number of bathrooms.

Instruments that hold, and a file that holds up

Purification drifts quietly — resistivity and total organic carbon move long before a run fails. Monitored to the grade the method needs, instruments hold and reprocessing water meets ST108.

Fitted around trading hours

Early, late or on a closed day. The people who fit it are the people who come back to service it.

What the system is

How it is put together

Water comes in, and we take out the dirt, then the chlorine that shortens membrane life, then the hardness that scales your glasswash and sterilisers. After that we clean it to the level each machine actually needs, and read it at one fixed point so the numbers compare over time. You end up with instruments that hold their settings and a file that is ready on survey day.

Tap a stage to see what it does

  1. THE MAIN
  2. Grit and rust out before anything else, so the membranes and the resin downstream are not paying for it.

  3. Chlorine off the supply before it reaches a membrane, which is what shortens membrane life fastest.

  4. Ahead of the glasswash, the washer-disinfectors and the sterilisers. Scale in a chamber is the visible end of a supply problem.

  5. Sized to the grade the method actually requires rather than the highest grade on the catalogue page. This is the stage ST108 is written about.

  6. A fixed point the plan names, so the readings are taken in the same place every time and the trend means something.

  7. At the point of use, where the risk assessment calls for it.

Sediment pre-filter

Grit and rust out before anything else, so the membranes and the resin downstream are not paying for it.

Carbon filtration

Chlorine off the supply before it reaches a membrane, which is what shortens membrane life fastest.

Softening, where hardness earns it

Ahead of the glasswash, the washer-disinfectors and the sterilisers. Scale in a chamber is the visible end of a supply problem.

Deionisation or reverse osmosis

Sized to the grade the method actually requires rather than the highest grade on the catalogue page. This is the stage ST108 is written about.

Sampling point

A fixed point the plan names, so the readings are taken in the same place every time and the trend means something.

Ultraviolet disinfection

At the point of use, where the risk assessment calls for it.

Pricing

What it costs

All three on one agreement over twenty-four months: $355 – $2,019 a month.

Test & Engineer

Assess & engineer the system

$450 – $1,400the panel, plus the supply survey and control-point sampling
$23 – $72a month, inside the combined agreement
  • Resistivity and total organic carbon at every instrument that specifies a grade
  • Sampling at the control locations the plan names
  • A supply diagram from meter to fixture: dead legs, low-flow branches, temperature profile
  • Hardness, total dissolved solids and chlorine on the incoming supply
  • A recommended, engineered design for the site, drawn from your own readings
  • The assessment and the design are free

More sampling than any other setting here: the plan has to name control locations, and the readings have to mean something as a trend.

Fit & commission

$4,500 – $28,000pre-treatment and polishing, fitted
$232 – $1,447a month over twenty-four months
  • Reverse osmosis and polishing to the grade each method actually requires
  • Monitoring at the control locations, with acceptable ranges written down
  • Pre-filtration and softening ahead of the glasswash and the sterilisers
  • Point-of-use filtration where the risk assessment calls for it
  • Permit pulled and fitted by a licensed plumber
  • Commissioned under real flow before we leave

Built from published 2026 commercial reverse-osmosis data: $3,500 at 500 GPD to $15,000 at 2,000 GPD, plus 10 to 20 per cent to install, and 40 to 60 per cent more where the grade needs double-pass or electrodeionisation.

Protect

Service & compliance

$1,200 – $6,000a year
$100 – $500a month, spread across the year
  • The annual review written, filed and ready for survey day
  • Resistivity, total organic carbon and conductivity trended rather than spot-read
  • Scheduled sampling on the routes the plan sets out
  • Cartridge and membrane changes before the numbers drift
  • Backflow devices tested on the Massachusetts cycle by a MassDEP-certified tester — reduced-pressure zone twice a year, double check annually (310 CMR 22.22)
  • A dated record after every visit, for the file an inspector asks for

Service scales with the control locations and the sampling frequency the plan sets. Authoring the water management programme is quoted separately.

Your price is confirmed after the test and assessment — nothing here is a quote. We survey the premises, read the water, and give you an itemised fixed price in writing before any work starts. Questions

What people ask us

What does a healthcare water management programme need?

A named accountable person, a map of the water system from meter to fixture, control locations with written acceptable ranges, and monitoring that is trended and recorded — what ASHRAE 188 sets out and surveyors check. For sterile processing, ANSI/AAMI ST108 sets the water quality for each step. We write the plan, run the sampling and keep the file.

What is ANSI/AAMI ST108?

The American standard for the quality of water used to process medical devices, published in 2023. It sets water categories for each step of reprocessing, from cleaning to the final rinse, and expects the water to be monitored against them.

What is the difference between Type I and Type II lab water?

They are grades under ASTM D1193. Type I is the purest, at 18 MΩ·cm resistivity, used for sensitive analysis; Type II, at 1 MΩ·cm or more, suits general lab work and feeding analysers. We polish to the grade each method actually specifies.

How much does a healthcare water programme cost?

The survey and control-point sampling runs $450 to $1,400. Pre-treatment and polishing runs $4,500 to $28,000 fitted, depending on flow and grade. Service is $1,200 to $6,000 a year, and writing the water management programme itself is quoted separately.

Does Massachusetts regulate Legionella?

Massachusetts has no state Legionella regulation. The drivers are federal and accreditation-based: CMS expects hospitals and care facilities to have a water management programme, and The Joint Commission surveys against it.
