Water softener tank installed beside the main in a basement

Water Softeners

Hard water is not a health problem. It is an expense problem — paid out slowly through the water heater, the dishwasher, the kettle and every bar of soap in the house.

Why us

Why softener owners call us

Soft, and it stays soft

The commonest complaint about a softener is that the water still feels hard — nearly always the wrong grain setting or resin already fouled. Both are measured before anything is fitted.

Iron handled upstream

A softener is not an iron filter. Above roughly 2 ppm the resin fouls and the unit fails years early, so if your readings show iron it gets a stage of its own first.

Less salt, not more

A time-clock head regenerates whether it needs to or not. Metered regeneration runs on the water you actually used, and the salt bill follows.

Clear answers, in writing

Every reading printed beside the Massachusetts or federal limit, with a plain verdict on each one, so you know exactly where your water stands.

A local team that stays

The people who fit your system are the people who come back to it — servicing and re-testing on whatever timetable you are comfortable with.

What the system is

How it is put together

A softener exchanges the calcium and magnesium that make water hard for sodium or potassium, in a resin bed that is periodically rinsed clean with brine. Two things decide whether it works well: whether the bed is sized to your actual hardness and draw, and whether it regenerates on demand or on a timer.

Tap a stage to see what it does

  1. THE MAIN
  2. Grit and rust caught before the resin. A fouled bed stops softening quietly, years before it should, and this is the cheapest stage to keep clean.

  3. The commonest cause of “the water still feels hard” is this valve left open. It is set, labelled and shown to you before we leave.

  4. Grain capacity matched to your hardness multiplied by what the household actually draws — not to the number of bathrooms.

  5. Salt dissolved for regeneration, on a meter rather than a clock. The bed is rinsed when it is spent, not every third night whatever happened.

Test & Engineer

Measure hardness & iron

$250the lab panel — the assessment is free
$22a month, inside the combined bill
  • A lab-conducted panel on your own water, billed at cost
  • Every reading printed beside the Massachusetts or federal limit
  • A recommended, engineered design for your system, drawn from your own readings
  • The assessment and the design are free
  • A plain verdict on each figure, yours to take elsewhere

Grains per gallon and iron are measured before anything is sized. Below the threshold we will tell you a softener is a preference, not a fix.

Replace the head or the resin

$1,400 – $2,800installed, permits included
$123 – $246a month, inside the combined bill
  • Permit pulled and fitted by a licensed plumber
  • Equipment sized to your household’s real draw
  • A re-test once it is running, before and after on paper
  • Commissioned under real flow before we leave
  • Sequenced in the order the chemistry requires

The range depends on the grain capacity your household draw calls for, and on whether iron needs a stage of its own.

$900 – $1,900installed, permits included
$79 – $167a month, inside the combined bill
  • We keep the tank, valving and pipework still doing its job
  • Only the stages your readings actually call for are replaced
  • Permit pulled and fitted by a licensed plumber
  • A re-test once it is running, before and after on paper
  • Re-sequenced if the existing order is what is failing

Often the tank is sound and only the control head or the resin bed has gone. We will say so if that is the cheaper fix.

$22 – $35a month, one visit a year
  • Filters, media, salt and ultraviolet lamps
  • You set the frequency — one visit a year, two, or four
  • A water test at any visit you choose to have one
  • The year-on-year comparison, in writing
  • The same local crew every time

Service frequency on your schedule. No contract, no minimums.

Your price is confirmed after the test and assessment — nothing here is a quote. The readings decide the system and the system decides the number, and you get it in writing, itemised and fixed, before any work starts. Ranges are illustrative, from published 2026 installed-cost data. Financing is available through Wisetack or Klarna, subject to credit approval; the monthly figures here are shown over twelve months.

Questions

What people ask us

Do I need a water softener?

Only if your water is hard enough to cost you money. Above roughly 7 grains per gallon, scale builds up in water heaters, dishwashers and fixtures; below that, a softener is a preference rather than a fix. We measure hardness with a $250 lab test before sizing anything, and tell you which side of the line you are on.

How much does a water softener cost?

A new softener runs $1,400 to $2,800 fitted, depending on the grain capacity your household needs and whether iron needs a stage of its own. Replacing just the control head or the resin is $900 to $1,900. Service, salt and retesting is $250 to $400 a year.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Yes. Softening swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, adding about 8 mg of sodium per litre for every grain of hardness removed. For most households that is small; if you are on a low-sodium diet, use potassium chloride instead of salt, or keep a reverse osmosis tap for drinking.

Why does my water still feel hard with a softener?

Usually one of three things: the bypass valve has been left open, the resin bed is fouled by iron or sediment, or the softener regenerates on a clock rather than on what you actually use. All three are cheaper to fix than replacing the unit.

Do salt-free softeners work?

Salt-free conditioners do not remove hardness; they change how the minerals behave so less scale sticks. They can help protect a water heater, but they will not stop spotting on glass or the soap problem. We will tell you which suits your readings.
